Setting a bad example

When I wrote to the people of Spain after the terrorist attacks of March 11, 2004, I compared it to the September 11 attacks here in America. I have since realized that it's not such an easy comparison. The reason I feel this way is because, unlike America's response to September 11, Spain caved in to the terrorists and handed them precisely what they wanted — a change in national policy.
With the new Spanish government already promising to pull Spanish troops out of Iraq and mumbling about their wavering support for the war on terrorism, it's difficult for me to see how anyone could think that the terrorists hadn't won. The Spanish people, out of fear and anger, readily handed the terrorists a change in leadership which by action has already been more responsive to the terrorists' demands.
Apparently I'm not the only one who thinks this way. A recent article in Newsweek echoes my sentiments in this regard. Take a look at the article by Rod Nordland to see what I mean.
Oh, and before you start bitching and moaning that this is not a widely shared belief, I also suggest you take a look at this editorial over at FOX News.
