Question about photos

I want to query you on my use of photos here.  This is in regards to personal photos that I post and not pictures from unfamiliar sources (e.g. those found in pet porn).

Generally speaking, I post photos at a resolution of 640×480 pixels (maximum horizontal of 640×480 and maximum vertical of 480×640).  Are these too large?  Are they just fine?  Would it be better if instead I posted smaller inline images (visible in the post) that link to larger versions?

I’m asking because I know that images too large for some resolutions will push under the sidebar content, so they won’t be as enjoyable or clear as would otherwise be available if using a larger screen resolution.  Since I develop and post using either 1280×1024 pixels (on my desktop) or 1680×1050 pixels (on my laptop), these concerns do not affect me, yet sitting at Mom’s computer recently made me realize that perhaps I am the exception on the resolution rule.  Her PC runs with less screen real estate than mine and suffers from the oft oversized image problem.

I’m looking for a consensus on what the appropriate image approach should be.  If I continue posting at the current size, I’m afraid some will never be able to enjoy the entire image, so perhaps it would be best to reduce the inline image size and use links to larger renditions when appropriate.  Let me know what you think.
