According to George W. Bush, it’s Loyalty Day.  Can you imagine what this means?  I smell a dictatorial monarchy in the works, and today, May 1, will be marked as the day you are forced to show your loyalty to the ruling class.  To wit:

Our Nation is blessed and bound together by a creed of freedom and equality that is entrusted to all Americans. Preserving the ideals of our founding requires the service and sacrifice of every generation, and on Loyalty Day, we celebrate the gift of liberty and remember our own obligation to this great Nation.

The dedication and selflessness of America’s soldiers and their families inspire us all. Some of our Nation’s finest men and women have given their lives in freedom’s cause. Loyalty Day is also a time for us to reflect on our responsibilities to our country as we work to show the world the meaning and promise of liberty. The right to vote is one of our most cherished rights and voting is one of our most fundamental duties. By making a commitment to be good citizens, flying the American flag, or taking the time to learn about our Nation’s history, we show our gratitude for the blessings of freedom.

The greatest strength of America is in the heart and soul of its people, and every time a volunteer reaches out to a neighbor in need, our Nation grows stronger and more hopeful. Thousands of Americans are serving a higher calling by mentoring, coaching, serving in Senior Corps, and by participating in many other programs that enrich lives and help build a better tomorrow. The light of freedom shines brightly because of compassionate people who care about others. Their dedication to a cause greater than self gives all Americans confidence in the future of our Nation.

The Congress, by Public Law 85-529, as amended, has designated May 1 of each year as “Loyalty Day.” I ask all Americans to join me in this day of celebration and in reaffirming our allegiance to our Nation.

You see, with Congress pandering to Dubya’s every whim, we now have a federal law requiring this date to be Loyalty Day forever more.  Be afraid.  Be very afraid.

It’s critical to note one writes a listed document (where more than one point is going to be made) with the most important at the end.  This ensures the last argument is the one most remembered and freshest on the mind.  Considering that, understand his last mention in the document is “Loyalty Day is also a time for us to reflect on our responsibilities to our country…”  This can mean nothing other than demanding the American people provide some kind of homage to The Motherland every year moving forward.  I can imagine a person with his proclivity for power pilfering to have intentions other than honorable ones when declaring we most demonstrate some form of loyalty.

President Bush has quietly claimed the authority to disobey more than 750 laws enacted since he took office, asserting that he has the power to set aside any statute passed by Congress when it conflicts with his interpretation of the Constitution.

Among the laws Bush said he can ignore are military rules and regulations, affirmative-action provisions, requirements that Congress be told about immigration services problems, ”whistle-blower” protections for nuclear regulatory officials, and safeguards against political interference in federally funded research.

Legal scholars say the scope and aggression of Bush’s assertions that he can bypass laws represent a concerted effort to expand his power at the expense of Congress, upsetting the balance between the branches of government. The Constitution is clear in assigning to Congress the power to write the laws and to the president a duty ”to take care that the laws be faithfully executed.” Bush, however, has repeatedly declared that he does not need to ”execute” a law he believes is unconstitutional.

Many legal scholars say they believe that Bush’s theory about his own powers goes too far and that he is seizing for himself some of the law-making role of Congress and the Constitution-interpreting role of the courts.

Phillip Cooper, a Portland State University law professor who has studied the executive power claims Bush made during his first term, said Bush and his legal team have spent the past five years quietly working to concentrate ever more governmental power into the White House.

”There is no question that this administration has been involved in a very carefully thought-out, systematic process of expanding presidential power at the expense of the other branches of government,” Cooper said. ”This is really big, very expansive, and very significant.”

No surprises there, although the scope of his illegal activities is breathtakingly disconcerting.

This year’s Law Day theme, “Liberty Under Law: Separate Branches, Balanced Powers,” honors the wisdom of the separation of powers that the Framers of our Constitution established for the Federal Government. Delegates to the Constitutional Convention recognized the risks that accompany the concentration of power and devised a system in which the Federal Government’s authorities are divided among three independent branches. James Madison highlighted the importance of our Constitution’s separation of powers when he wrote, “the accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands… may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny.”

Throughout our Nation’s history, we have been reminded repeatedly of the wisdom of the Framers’ design. Are you laughing yet?  You should be.  Bush made a funny — although it’s not really funny at all.

This is priceless!

The Senate Republican plan to mail $100 checks to voters to ease the burden of high gasoline prices is eliciting more scorn than gratitude from the very people it was intended to help.

Aides for several Republican senators reported a surge of calls and e-mail messages from constituents ridiculing the rebate as a paltry and transparent effort to pander to voters before the midterm elections in November.

“The conservatives think it is socialist bunk, and the liberals think it is conservative trickery,” said Don Stewart, a spokesman for Senator John Cornyn, Republican of Texas, pointing out that the criticism was coming from across the ideological spectrum.

Angry constituents have asked, “Do you think we are prostitutes? Do you think you can buy us?” said another Republican senator’s aide, who was granted anonymity to openly discuss the feedback because the senator had supported the plan.

I mean, really: $100?  That’s laughable.

[D]isapproval started flowing in almost as soon as the idea surfaced, said aides in several Republican offices. One senior aide to a Southern lawmaker said the calls were surprisingly harsh. Some complained that the rebate would amount to only two fill-ups at the gas station.

Even though some voters have been outspoken in their opposition to the $100 rebate, Democrats still want credit for being the first to think of putting money back in taxpayers’ pockets. A few days before the Republicans went public with their plan, Senator Debbie Stabenow, Democrat of Michigan, proposed a $500 rebate plan, a figure that she said was more commensurate with how much the higher gas prices will cost Americans this year.

The Democrats have also recommended suspending gas taxes for at least 60 days (that would be a savings of 18.4 cents per gallon).  Because Republicans control Congress, however, they tossed that idea out the window and went with their own suggestion: try to buy off the American public with a paltry $100 check, money being sent even to those who do not own cars.

Oh, and something else the Republicans did was to attach to the refund plan oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) in Alaska.  Essentially, if they approve and enact this whorish buy-off of the American public, it comes at the price of an ecological refuge that will be plundered and ruined by big oil (remember, they’re already causing extinctions and disasters the world over).

Ms. Stabenow also criticized Republicans for linking the rebate to oil drilling in the arctic refuge.

Republicans know that drilling in the refuge “is highly controversial and not going to happen,” Ms. Stabenow said. “I question their sincerity in putting this forward.”

What a mess, and what an insult.  Still, I’m thrilled that so many citizens have taken action by contacting their representatives in Congress to let them know this is laughably inadequate and insolent.
