Vocabularium

An interesting etymology for this one…  Follow the bouncing ball.

maudlin (maud·lin): / MAWD lin /
adjective

(1) foolishly or overly sentimental; weakly or tearfully emotional
(2) mawkishly or irrationally sentimental because of drunkenness

[From Middle English Maudelen via French Madeleine from Latin Magdalene, ultimately from Greek Magdalene, all references to the story of Mary Magdalene who was commonly portrayed in art as a weeping penitent.]

Usage: [WARNING: Heavy alliteration ahead] Many of today’s self-proclaimed heartfelt dramas are nothing more than maudlin and melodramatic mishmash.
