A few of my favorite things #7

Great-tailed grackles (Quiscalus mexicanus).  Subtle beauty and excessive personality.

  1. Today is my coming out day. No longer a lurker. Thanks to a shared affection for Quiscalus mexicanus. Their vocalizations immediately take me back to Quintana Roo and I suddenly feel all exotic and sultry and have an immediate hankering for a plate full of tacos al pastor and a frothy glass of horchata. Any bird that can do that – gets my attention. And the courtship of Eddie’s Grackle – always lovely with wings all akimbo and vibrato.

  2. We used to get flocks of common grackles (Quiscalus quiscula) in our neighbourhood, but I don’t see them around anymore. I love the yellow eyes set in the coruscating blues of the plumage – your last image captures that so well.

  3. I’ll never forget my first field trip to south Texas – I couldn’t believe the garrulous animations and electric vocalizations of these birds. It’s been too long since I’ve visited your great state (6 years) and had a chance to see them.

    1. “…garrulous animations and electric vocalizations…” That has to be the best description of them I’ve ever seen, Ted. It’s all that excessive personality they have. And though they’re not as good at it as mockingbirds, it’s really fascinating when they mimic (and they’ll mimic just about any noise).

You’re long overdue for a fixin’ of Lone Star State!

  4. The third picture from the top is especially great, showcasing the sassy personality. I’m hearing the song “Green Onions” playing in the background of that scene.
