Built like a tank

This is, I believe, a leaf-footed bug (Acanthocephala terminalis).  They also are called generically coreid bugs or big-legged bugs.  If I’ve misidentified the beast, let me know.

It visited me once as I stood outside in the evening’s waining sun.  With a tremendous whack surprising for his size, he hit one of the patio doors, fell to the ground, then promptly walked around a bit until he was satisfied nothing of interest was to be found there.  He left on wing as quickly as he arrived, and with equal lack of flying skills (or so it seemed from my perspective).
