Grendel’s Christmas gift was a day at the emergency vet

Grendel once again took the initiative to ensure my holiday was anything but normal.  Before the noon hour could make its appearance, I knew something was wrong.  He was not eating or drinking again despite the medication intended to help stimulate his appetite.  He began throwing up again on a regular basis despite the medication intended to alleviate his nausea.  He sank back into his lethargic ways and showed little interest in movement except to get up and toss his cookies.  There’s something to be said for consistency, at least.

While he has not been well for over a week, he had, with the help of a lot of different medication, at least been enabled to get through his days with minimal fuss, although he was still quite lethargic and obviously unwell.  His approach to the holiday itself, however, was to demonstrate his illness with rabid ferocity.  Eventually we headed to the emergency vet.

Much to my relief the doctor was able to get his nausea under control with a stronger medication.  Once that was addressed, his appetite found its strength again with a little help from the stimulant he’s taking.  We stayed at the emergency vet until yesterday evening to ensure he was fully hydrated, was able to eat on his own, and was no longer throwing up.

As we won’t have the biopsy results until later this week, we’ll check in with his regular doctor today to ensure they have all the results from the emergency vet.  Based on that, they may wish to change his current medication or see him to verify he’s doing OK.

I’m just glad he felt well enough by last night to have some tuna and holiday treats with his siblings.  I made sure Grendel received a good helping drenched with fresh water.  Even if he wasn’t interested in eating it, hopefully he’d drink the fluid.  Ultimately, he snacked on the tuna off and on and drank all of the fish-flavored water in which it swam on his personal serving plate.

As of this morning, he seems to be feeling better once again.  He’s up and about already, and he’s presenting a shell of his normal morning routine.  I’m happy to say he’s had a bite to eat already and has been seen at the water dish a few times by several different witnesses, myself included.  Perhaps he simply had a bad day yesterday.

I’ll keep him on his new medication and will check in with his regular doctors a bit later on.  In the meantime, I’ll be hanging out at home all day to keep an eye on him.
