Have you heard? Missouri’s legislature would like to pass a resolution that it recognizes Christianity as the only true religion, that Christianity is the basis upon which the United States was founded, and that Christianity is the majority and should be respected as such. I’m not kidding.
As Slacker points out, this is not a bill and isn’t slated to become law, but it is an official act by the state’s elected legislature. Essentially, they wish to alienate all of the state’s citizens who are not Christians by declaring the state — unofficially, of course — a Christian creation. How disgusting.
Because it’s a resolution it has no legal bearing or weight, yet it is a condemnation of all things not Christian and a clear declaration by elected officials that non-Christians are a minority who deserve no respect or equal time in the state’s business. Not only that, but it’s a blatant waste of time that should be spent on the people’s business, tending to the needs of the constituents and addressing true legislative responsibilities.
Am I the only one who finds this offensive? Do you think the idiots responsible for this paused even for a moment to consider how they might feel were the roles reversed and another religion in the majority? Say, for instance, Islam, Judaism, Satanism, or any religion other than Christianity? I doubt it. This alienates anyone who is not a Christian. It segregates the state’s denizens into Christians and everyone else. It specifically places non-Christians at a disadvantage by making clear they are a minority and do not deserve the same attention or respect.
I simply cannot believe the direction in which this country is heading. Have we, as Americans, not spent decades pushing other countries to avoid state religions? How long have we proclaimed that governments should be free of religious influence, whether here or abroad? It appears, given Missouri’s intolerance of non-Christians empowered by a federal government now controlled by religion, that our country has lost its way. Where has America gone? Are we not a republic, and isn’t a republic based on the premise that all people are equal? I’d even swear that I read that in texts forming the very foundations of our country…
