There comes a time when you simply must admit that Bush intentionally breaks the law and takes great joy in doing so. This time, it’s nauseatingly blatant.
When President Bush signed the reauthorization of the USA Patriot Act this month, he included an addendum saying that he did not feel obliged to obey requirements that he inform Congress about how the FBI was using the act’s expanded police powers.
The bill contained several oversight provisions intended to make sure the FBI did not abuse the special terrorism-related powers to search homes and secretly seize papers. The provisions require Justice Department officials to keep closer track of how often the FBI uses the new powers and in what type of situations. Under the law, the administration would have to provide the information to Congress by certain dates.
Where shall I begin?
First and most important, it is illegal and unconstitutional for a president to add anything to a law written and passed by Congress. This clearly breaches the separation of duty between the branches of government. It is only within the president’s purview to sign or veto, but legislation is plainly the responsibility of the legislative branch.
Second, Congress specifically included oversight verbiage in the law intended to control the FBI’s use of its expanded powers, oversight which the American people deserve and for which Congress is constitutionally empowered. Bush intentionally added interpretive language to the law that attempts to exclude him from that very oversight, a portion approved by the people’s legislative representatives who alone are constitutionally empowered to write law — period.
Third and finally, Bush is yet again declaring himself above the laws of our nation. King George is out of control, moving and counter-moving to implement his own fiefdom, a dictatorship over which he can maintain absolute control.
Be afraid.
