America needs to step in. America also needs to stop blindly supporting the Israelis.
Hezb’Allah is not the same as the new democratically-elected Lebanese government or the country’s civilians. Despite this truth, Israel is targeting the government and civilians. They’ve killed 50 thus far, have blockaded the country by sea, air and land, has destroyed the airport, and is victimizing the wrong people.
Israel, on the other hand, is defending their country, so a certain degree of violence and collateral damage is to be expected, but there is absolutely no reason for the scale of this endeavor, or for the intentional and systematic targeting of civilians, civilian infrastructure, or the foundations of the new democracy.
If Israel weakens the new Lebanese government, it could launch the country back into terrorist hands and plunge it into another bloody civil war.
The entire situation is teetering on the edge of becoming a major incident in the Middle East. Syria and Iran are being dragged into it by Israel (another significant mistake at this juncture). Between Syria and Iran? Iraq, of course. And Afghanistan is just a stone’s throw away. You undoubtedly can see how quickly the entire area could erupt into war with but a single stupid move by any of these countries, not to mention the lack of action by America.
And, again, where is America? Even Syria said last night that America has always been the honest broker in such cases, the voice of reason to bring calm to a chaotic system, the only remaining superpower who could and would step in to ensure the safety of all parties. And this time? All Bush is saying is that Israel has the right to protect itself, but that they should be careful not to topple the government in Lebanon.
Wow. After all that activity, I’m surprised the situation hasn’t already been resolved.
