A whole bunch of zilch

About that weather thing…

Last night was the worst part of our winter storm.  How did it turn out?

Basically, we got nothing.

Sure, there was a bit of black ice on the roads.  Bridges and overpasses were especially treacherous.  But major ice event?  Nope.

I found some minor icicles hanging on the patio.  The bushes outside had a wee touch of the frost scattered about their foliage.  The trees show some icing.  All that said, Mother Nature basically invalidated all the prognostications of arctic landscapes.

Yet the failure of forecasts goes well beyond just that.

Remember that bit about not getting above freezing?  And we were even told we’d not see the sun until later in the week, if at all.

Well, the sun was shining down from a predominately clear sky at eight o’clock this morning.  That, as you can imagine, has made short work of most of the ice, although it has clouded up a bit in the last hour.

And as for the temperature, it now looks like we’ll get safely above freezing today and even higher tomorrow.  Still, it was way below freezing this morning with wind chills at least ten degrees colder.

I’m disappointed in the whole thing at least as far as wintry precipitation is concerned.  That said, we’re mighty grateful for the abundance of rain.  Area lakes fell to historically low levels as the entire region languished in unending drought for more than two years, so the three-day downpour helped tremendously in that regard.  All save one are still significantly below normal, I know, yet most saw healthy gains since Friday.  That’s a very good thing.

All in all, the weekend was uneventful in my area.  Other parts of North Texas did not enjoy such a reprieve, though, and the icy weather now seems destined for parts of South Texas that normally see very little, if any, of such things.

Maybe next time…
