Vocabularium

I abhor those who use this method of debate.

sophistry (soph·is·try): / SOF uh stree /
noun

(1) a method of argumentation that seems clever but is actually fallacious; subtly deceptive reasoning offered as legitimate argumentation
(2) a subtly deceptive, tricky, superficially plausible argument that is actually flawed or dishonest; a false argument; a clever or subtle argument that is misleading; a sophism

[From Middle English ‘sophistrie’ via Old French sophisme from Greek sophisma meaning “clever device, acquired skill.”  Ultimately from Greek sophos meaning “clever, wise, skilled in a craft.”]

Usage: Sophistry is to be shunned as the tool of wicked minds.
