Vocabularium

Since my mind isn’t fully functional yet this morning afternoon, here’s a quick word I learned many moons ago while reading Homer (IIRC, Hymns, but I could be remembering incorrectly).

paean (pae·an): / PEE uhn /
noun

(1) a song or hymn of praise, triumph, joy, thanksgiving, or tribute
(2) a fervent spoken, written, or musical work that honors or praises its subject; tribute; encomium
(3) a hymn of thanksgiving or invocation to a Greek deity, especially Apollo

[From Latin paean meaning “hymn of deliverance or thanksgiving,” especially when addressed to Apollo, from Paean, an epithet for Apollo in a hymn, from Greek Paian, an appellation of Apollo meaning “physician of the gods (literally ‘one who touches’),” from paio meaning “to touch, strike.”]

Usage: I hope in retrospect, posthumous or otherwise, my life is viewed as a paean to living, to nature, and most especially to The Kids.
