After all the hoopla regarding images and where to host them and how to show them and all that jazz, I’ve come full circle and then some.
I’m going to host my images at Zooomr. Doing so gives me the flexibility to offer larger versions without biting the bullet on bandwidth. Oh, and there’s the server space consideration to take into account as well.
I realized as I went through all of my photos that I was sacrificing quality in lieu of restraining bandwidth usage.
Along those same lines, I came to a simple conclusion: Attempting to exercise absolute control over these images was fruitless. As with all things on the intertubes, it’s predominately out of my control once I post it. That doesn’t mean I want people stealing my photos, but it also doesn’t mean everyone should suffer due to my obsessive control tendency.
Like videos before them, I’m now going to use a hosting service for pictures. This change gives me much more flexibility. Sure, it also means I have a wee bit less control over the content, but it resolves a great many concerns while offering better quality.
So there you have it.
Unlike the resize project I was working on, which moved backward through the blog chronology, this change will move forward starting at the beginning. That means you might not notice all of the changes as they happen (although all new photos will be posted this way). Eventually, however, all of the posts will be updated to utilize this service.
The exceptions will be those images which I don’t own. Those will remain hosted on my server.
