State of confusion

I skipped watching His Majesty’s SOTU last night.  That’s not to say I didn’t try, for I did: I got through perhaps the first three or four sentences of Bush’s speech before my own disgust and frustration forced me to move on to other things — anything, in fact, other than him.  Hearing him speak lies and deceptions while he violates all that I hold dear is too much to overcome.  The America I grew up with and loved is gone.  He’s the cause.  He epitomizes the violation and rape of America.  From him, SOTU is nothing more than “vacuousness and inanity.”

Still, I read the speech this morning so I could be “up to date” on the state of our nation.  I would hate to be out of touch with the latest spin from King George.  Sadly, there was nothing but lies, innuendo, slight of speech, and general confusion in Dubya’s self-promoting, ego-stroking political rant.

Don’t worry, poppets.  I won’t launch into any tirades or solemnly evoke fatigue by way of a line-by-line response.  There are a few items, however, that call for some brief comment at minimum.

First, what’s up with the manimal thing?

Tonight I ask you to pass legislation to prohibit the most egregious abuses of medical research, human cloning in all its forms, creating or implanting embryos for experiments, creating human-animal hybrids, and buying, selling or patenting human embryos.

Where did that come from?  It’s like he had a bad nightmare about being on an island with Dr. Moreau.  This is nothing more than pandering to a lobby somewhere.  Does he realize that outlawing the very activity of which he speaks will be detrimental to current medical research?  And, that’s just one example about Down syndrome.  Imagine the impact to studies dealing with other diseases and afflictions.

Second, who does he think he’s fooling with that sudden dedication to science?

First, I propose to double the federal commitment to the most critical basic research programs in the physical sciences over the next 10 years. This funding will support the work of America’s most creative minds as they explore promising areas such as nanotechnology and supercomputing and alternative energy sources. Second, I propose to make permanent the research and development tax credit to encourage bolder private-sector initiative in technology. With more research in both the public and private sectors, we will improve our quality of life and ensure that America will lead the world in opportunity and innovation for decades to come.

Third, we need to encourage children to take more math and science and to make sure those courses are rigorous enough to compete with other nations. We’ve made a good start in the early grades with the No Child Left Behind Act, which is raising standards and lifting test scores across our country. Tonight I propose to train 70,000 high school teachers to lead Advanced Placement courses in math and science, bring 30,000 math and science professionals to teach in classrooms and give early help to students who struggle with math, so they have a better chance at good high-wage jobs. If we ensure that America’s children succeed in life, they will ensure that America succeeds in the world.

He must think we’re all on crack.  The bonehead has endorsed the teaching of un-intelligent design in the classroom, a blatant and undeniable violation of all that is scientific.  He also constrained stem cell research with insurmountable obstacles and restrictions prohibiting needed progress in the treatment of major threats.  There are other reasons, of course, and this promise seems empty at best.  I laughed aloud when reading that tidbit.

There are critical issues he missed entirely, such as the pending doom of primary medical care.

It is, ultimately, a commercial for the sitting president and/or party.  It’s grossly offensive.

Oh, but there’s more.  In a blatant demonstration of those freedoms he claims to protect and cherish, at least two people were arrested before they could enter the chambers to hear his gobbledygook.

One, Cindy Sheehan is arrested for wearing a shirt that says, “2,245 Dead. How many more?”  I don’t like Cindy Sheehan for a great many reasons sensible and civilized people would understand, but this is horrifically senseless and reminiscent of a police state.

But, that’s not all!  No, because you acted so quickly, we’ve thrown in the arrest of Republican Congressman C.W. Bill’s wife for wearing a shirt that says, “Support the Troops – Defending Our Freedom.”  Yes, you heard that correctly: they arrested a member of their own party for daring to show support for our troops.

I’m sorry, did I miss something?  Now we arrest any dissenting point of view and prohibit anyone from seeing or hearing something contrary to the government’s stance?  Both ejections are illegal, but we’ve learned to overlook the criminal activity taking place in the name of national security.

All the while, the new AT&T is being sued because of their participation in the domestic spying scandal.

Be afraid.  Be very afraid.
