Despite having watched V for Vendetta (official site) several weeks ago, I never posted anything about it. Let me correct that mistake now.
As I’ve mentioned to several people since watching this film, it is an absolutely splendid piece of work. It is intelligent, politically charged without being partisan, and very much libertarian (both the philosophical and political meanings of the word). I found it a compelling tale that is highly entertaining. Oh, and it’s not a liberal film despite proclamations by many to the contrary.
But rather than reinvent the wheel, let me suggest you read Mark’s review. He originally wrote something about the film without having seen it, but did so based on reviews he read. Remember, Mark is a conservative and viewed the film through those eyes. He recently — and finally — watched it. What was his response? In his own words, “eating crow”:
I previously wrote about the movie V for Vendetta — well, I wrote about a review of the movie. I commented as I did, rather sarcastically, because the reviewer had portrayed the movie as a left-wing hit piece. It’s not a hard sell… most of Hollywood’s produce is a bunch of socialist pacifist tripe.
Well, shame on me…
He does a fantastic job of drawing out the truths in the film that I believe everyone should know. It is important and telling, and it’s a message that, as Mark so ably discovered, is “evocative of the American Revolution”.
Wildly entertaining, intellectually captivating, and socially relevant, I strongly recommend you see this film if you have not already. Even if you simply indulge in its entertainment value and completely ignore or miss the underlying truths and challenges, you won’t be disappointed.
Again, go read Mark’s response to better understand the film’s value. And then watch the movie.
