Steve Irwin would not approve

Well, this just goes to show you yet another reason why I hate people.  (Emphasis from original)

Dead stingrays with their tails cut off have been found in Australia, sparking concern that fans of naturalist Steve Irwin may be avenging his death.

Mr Irwin, a TV personality known as the “Crocodile Hunter”, was killed while diving in Queensland when a stingray’s barb stabbed him in the chest.

Since then, 10 stingrays have been found mutilated on Queensland beaches.

Government officials said they were investigating the deaths and there could be prosecutions.

Two stingrays were found at a beach north of Brisbane with their tails cut off, while eight were found on another beach on Monday, The Australian reported.

Let’s consider this for a moment.  Irwin was a naturalist and conservationist.  He readily took responsibility for his own foolishness and its repercussions, including stings, bites, and other animal-inflicted wounds.  His life was dedicated to bringing people closer to wildlife and nature as a whole.  He would never have advocated such a thing.

The man died because he put himself in danger pretty much any time he was conscious.  The stingray that killed him was acting in self-defense because Irwin invaded its territory and, along with the cameraman, made it feel cornered and threatened.

Does anyone truly believe he would ever have condoned lashing out with vengeance against the species like this?

Let me put it another way.  From now on, we shall blow up any mountain upon which a hiker falls and is hurt or killed.  We shall begin blowing up all cars on the road the instant one is involved in an accident that harms or kills another human being.  We will also begin killing all humans we see since we know in the time it’s taken me to write this post many people have harmed or killed others.

Our species is so fucking stupid.
