Can anyone be honest about this?

Porn.  It’s so popular that it’s a multibillion dollar industry.  It’s the driving force behind new technology.  Want proof?

What do you think was the driving force behind the adoption of VHS over Beta almost three decades ago?

CD-ROMs?  Yep, porn helped make them ubiquitous.

Video streaming owes its success and advancement to the porn industry.

Pop-up ads?  Thank porn.

Where do you think 900 numbers came from?

I bet they weren’t involved in computer-managed telephone systems, you say.  You’d be dead wrong.

The fee-based subscription model?  Can you guess where that came from?  Yep; pornographers.

DVDs?  Need I spell it out?

And what of digital downloads?  Same thing.

But there’s always online payment systems, huh?  You betcha, and porn made them what they are today.

In the ongoing debate over what will be the prevalent format in the high-definition DVD wars, porn is already ahead of the game and will undoubtedly be the deciding factor on which one becomes the most used technology (and, subsequently, the standard).

I could go on, but undoubtedly you get the point.

The porn industry drives technology and often is the deciding factor in what is adopted.  Where does this power come from?  Its consumers.  If people did not want such overwhelmingly large amounts of porn and were unwilling to pay for it, pornographers would be sidelined and waiting for others to command a new technological course.  But that’s not how it works, and the general business community has learned to pay close attention to what porn is doing since that’s what customers want and are willing to pay good money to use.

But why the sudden interest in porn?  Well, I’m not so much interested in the porn as I am the latest lies coming from the religious right about pornography.  Check this shit out from the American Family Association (the anti-gay arm of the Christian right) and AgapePress (the propaganda arm of the Christian right):

Although widely promoted, viewing pornographic websites is considered to be morally unacceptable by approximately 73 percent of U.S. adults.

The findings are based on a survey conducted by Harris Interactive and commissioned by Morality in Media. The levels of acceptability fluctuate depending on the demographic variables of gender, age, education, income, political affiliation, marital status and religion.

When posed with the question: “Do you consider it to be morally acceptable to view pornographic websites and videos?” — 21 percent of the 997 respondents said “yes,” 73 percent said “no,” 4 percent said “not sure,” and 2 percent refused to answer.

Findings also revealed that older female Americans are more likely to consider viewing pornography unacceptable, whereas younger male Americans are more likely to consider it acceptable.

“It is disturbing that so many younger males think it is morally acceptable to view pornography,” said Robert W. Peters, president of Morality in Media. “Since males are vulnerable to visual depictions of sex, however, perhaps it should not come as a surprise.”

In addition, the lower the education level of a respondent, the higher the acceptability; and the lower the income, the lower the acceptability. Married adults also find viewing pornographic websites and videos less morally acceptable than single adults.

I call BULLSHIT!

That’s so laughably dishonest that it could only come from people on the right and, more specifically, Christians.  If porn is so shunned in our country by such a vast majority of Americans, tell me then how the industry itself makes more money than god can count and so ably controls future technology by adopting what they like and forcing a significant shift in consideration.  Huh?  FUCKING TELL ME, YOU LIARS!

I’m sorry, but this is so disgustingly Christian insofar as it’s deceitful, full of spin, and completely out of touch with reality.  But they go on:

Peters points out that many long-term porn users who are addicts actually hate what they do. But despite their hate, Peter explained that, “In the ‘2006 State of the Industry’ report, the Free Speech Coalition [the ‘trade association of the adult entertainment industry’] states, ‘Adult entertainment has become widely accepted by Americans across the nation, especially in recent years.'”

Therefore, this perceived acceptability only spurs the entertainment media to promote pornography and porn stars.

Yawn.  No, wait.  That’s not correct.  It’s actually: FUCKING YAWN PRECEDED AND FOLLOWED BY UPROARIOUS LAUGHTER!

Who actually buys the bullshit these people are selling?  And I mean these self-proclaimed carriers of god’s word, not the porn industry.  It’s lies and more lies with these people.  If any of this were true, the porn industry would not be as successful as it is, it would not have such demonstrable and undeniable control over the advancement of technology and the definition of future standards, and it sure as hell wouldn’t still be around as one of the largest industries on the planet, let alone in the good ol’ US of A.

What these truth-less assholes are doing is attempting to deny the very nature of their own faith’s followers.  Since the vast majority of this country is in fact Christian, who do you think buys all that porn?  And watches it?  And enjoys it?  Oh, but they hate it, right?

NOT!

The issue here is not one of acceptance and use of pornography; it’s an issue of religious zealots spitting out untruth after untruth in an attempt to hide their own shame.  Who’d they call?  Their own church members?  That’s the only way you could excuse such inaccurate percentages, and that only because church members are the most likely to be dishonest about such things.

Hell, I’m a gay atheist and I don’t watch porn (pardon me, but I find the real thing much more satisfying, and I don’t mind exhibiting honesty in saying that).

Do you really think 21 percent of the nation is responsible for the many billions of dollars spent each year on pornography?  And for empowering that industry to practice and wield such incontrovertible control over new technologies?

Give me a fucking break.
