Empty referrer hotlinking now disabled

I’ve now disabled all possible hotlinking to this site’s resources.  I discovered some very sneaky people using blank HTTP referrers in order to get around my original restrictions on what domains could access what files.  No more.  From now on, only my domains will be allowed to access any resource on this site outside of HTML pages.  My bandwidth usage has been going up dramatically (now well over 8 GB per month).  After taking a serious look at that, I’ve found that significantly more than half of it is from hotlinked files with empty referrers (e.g., sending a direct image link to someone via e-mail).  Because context and control are lost under those circumstances, I’ve now entirely disabled all access to multimedia files except when the referrer is set to one of my domains.  Sorry if that’s a problem (although for the MySpace crowd it’s not just a problem, it’s total spit in the eye of copyright infringement and theft being perpetrated by losers who can’t read, don’t pay attention, and feel anything on the web must belong to everyone regardless of notices and the law).

For most, this change is meaningless as it won’t affect your ability to view the site.  For some using firewall software to restrict what information xenogere receives, this might disable everything except HTML data.  There’s nothing I can do about that anymore except recommend you allow referrer information to be sent to this domain.
