transitive verb

(1) to induce secretly to commit a crime or to perform a misdeed, as in bribery or blackmail
(2) to induce someone to commit perjury or to obtain false testimony from a witness (legal)

[From Latin subornare meaning “to furnish, supply, or equip secretly,” from ornare meaning “to furnish, supply, or equip.”]

Usage: The secret police found themselves unable to stop the tide of dissent after hundreds of conspirators spread throughout the country to suborn mutiny and revolution.
