Golden eyes

“A cat’s rage is beautiful, burning with pure cat flame, all its hair standing up and crackling blue sparks, eyes blazing and sputtering.”

— William S. Burroughs

Kazon sat betwixt my soul and the sun shining brightly in celestial bombardment of the earth beneath my feet, and there we two sat and stared, his golden eyes ablaze as they pierced me to the core, to the very part of me that defines who I am.  And I, in my weak and human way, stared back, my eyes empty save the love I felt for him, like that as a father feels for a child.

I melted in that moment, in those eyes, in the love that hung heavy between us and made the air thick with affection.  It lay upon me like wet cotton resting against bare skin.  This child, this feline, this predator who so ably controls my every whim with but a look from those golden eyes… he held my essence in his view on a burning cold day with nothing but sunbeams defining the time.

The afternoon toiled away in brief moments of reflection, my reflection in those eyes.  They stared at me with compassionate patience only a master of the universe could fully comprehend.  To appreciate what can be seen in those golden eyes is to finally touch heaven.

Right and proper

Kazon was sitting by the patio doors in the living room when I snapped this photo.  I’ve always loved the way he meticulously wraps his tail around his feet when he sits.  Most cats do this, I know, and there are plenty of reasons why they do, but there’s something about the way he sits, his tail wrapped around him, his feet tucked neatly away beneath it, that makes me think of a fine young gentleman, one brought up right and proper like.

Before the sun hides the day

I want to wish everyone a happy New Year celebration.  Be safe and careful, mindful always of your own limits as well as the many fools who have already passed theirs.

Let 2007 begin and progress as a year of wonder, respect, and responsibility.  Set your sights high but never lose track of where each step must land to carry you forward.  Do not let your advancement be upon the backs of others, or at the expense of this planet that has sheltered us and provided for us despite our uncaring abuse.

And finally from The Kids, a presentation of holiday faces as they wish you Happy New Year!

From top to bottom: Grendel, Loki, Kako, Kazon, and Vazra.

Kazon’s quest

Like every household with children, at least one of them has to look for hidden gifts.  Being the baby of the house, my little Robert Ballard is Kazon.  This is a photographic essay of his quest to discover Santa’s loot.  Here’s one to get you started; the rest are below the fold.

Kazon trying to open a bathroom drawer (107_0773)

I checked all the drawers and cabinets…

I looked under the soap holder…

Kazon walking out of the bathroom (107_0728)

They’re obviously not in the bathroom, so on to other rooms…

I looked high…

Kazon jumping down from the cat castle (113_1352)

But couldn’t find them there, so I kept going…

Then I looked low…

Kazon squirming around in my lap (120_2013)

I even looked in Daddy’s lap…

But all the looking just made me sleepy…

So I went back to Daddy’s lap and got comfortable…

[btw, Dr. Robert Ballard is the man who discovered the wreckage of the Titanic]
